Welcome recession news.....

Whether they depend on donors, advertising dollars or a combination of the two, mass media ministries are feeling the recession squeeze:

• Christian radio giant Salem Communications sold four stations, slashed 10% of its workforce and trimmed 5-percent off all salaries. Nonetheless, Salem's stock price has tumbled 74% in the past year to less than $1 per share.

• Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), the nation's largest Christian TV network, has laid off workers and scrambled to fill programming holes as T.D. Jakes, Joyce Meyer and other big-name ministries cut costs by producing fewer shows.

• Focus on the Family, which has produced James Dobson's radio show since 1977, has eliminated about 450 jobs (30% of its workforce peak) since 2004, including 200 job cuts since November.

HILARIOUS !

It's time to cash in on Catholic guilt.

At least that's what some parishioners think is happening at St. Luke's Church in Whitestone, Queens, where detailed breakdowns of members' weekly donations have begun appearing in the weekly bulletin.

"I don't like it," said Pat McGlinckey, 56. "It's like they're hitting below the belt to get us to give more."

Assclown of the Week

"Well, his father was Kenyan and they said he was born in Hawaii, but I haven't seen any birth certificate," Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., told constituents in Cullman County. "You have to be born in America to be president."

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE...? Really?

I've always been a fan of Danny Boyle's work (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) but Slumdog treats some very serious subjects (poverty, child abuse, and murder among them) as the backdrop for a rather loopy 'childhood true love' story. The setting, acting, and cinematography is all admirable, but the script is weak at best.

I'm glad to see Sean Penn win for his fantastic portrayal of Harvey Milk.

The film MILK should also have won for Best Picture. Especially at this time in history when some people see fit to deny others basic civil rights based solely on the drivel found in the Bible.

FOCA

The U.S. Catholic Church's crusade against the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) has all the hallmarks of a well-oiled lobbying campaign. A national postcard campaign is flooding the White House and congressional offices with messages opposing FOCA, and the Catholic bishops have made defeating the abortion rights legislation a top priority. In the most recent effort to stop the bill, Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia sent a letter to every member of Congress imploring them to "please oppose FOCA."

There is only one hitch. Congress isn't about to pass the Freedom of Choice Act because no such bill has been introduced.

Fossils Reveal Truth About Darwin's Theory

Robin Lloyd
LiveScience Senior Editor

With the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin this week, people around the world are celebrating his role as the father of evolutionary theory. Events and press releases are geared, in part, to combat false claims made by some who would discredit the theory.

One frequently cited "hole" in the theory: Creationists claim there are no transitional fossils, aka missing links. Biologists and paleontologists, among others, know this claim is false.

The quote that melted my brain......

Kurt Warner in the New York Times.....

"A lot of people believe 13 is an unlucky number," Warner said, "but I've kind of embraced it." He added: "A lot of negative things come with the No. 13. My life is never dictated by superstitions. My faith is first and foremost. If you believe that God's in control, there is no reason to believe in superstitions."

Ouch.
