In this undated file photo released by Mount Vernon, Ohio, City Schools as a part of independent investigation report, a Mount Vernon student with a branded cross on his arm is shown. A public school teacher taught creationism in his science class and used a device to burn the image of a cross on students' arms, according to a report by independent investigators. Mount Vernon Middle School teacher John Freshwater was insubordinate in failing to remove a Bible and other religious materials from his classroom and continued to preach his Christian beliefs despite complaints by other teachers and administrators, the report also said.(AP Photo/Mount Vernon City Schools).

The AP story covering this CRIME claims that the very religious town is "split on the subject" of the teacher's firing. Then they go on to say that a whopping 25 people showed up to the last school board meeting where it was discussed. Amazing.

Teaching ANY denomination of religion in a public school should ALWAYS be a fireable offense. Burning religious symbols onto your students arms should easily get you some serious jail time. And while the national media attention to this story will most likely see that the teacher does remain off the job, I doubt he will do any jail time. But he most certainly should.
