I would really like a pocket Hitchens. When I meet up with people who want to inflict their religious or other idiotic beliefs on me, I could pull out my pocket Hitchens, set him on a table and let him talk.

Pocket Hitchens for all!!

He's absolutely right. The Third Reich was not an atheistic regime. People just desperately want to believe it was in order to clear God and Christianity of any complicity.

Indeed. What religion did the vast majority of Europe belong to at the time Hitler came to power? It sure as shit wasn't Scientology.

Even if I respect Hitchens as a thinker and intellectual, he is misinformed: Hitler doesn't mention the jews in the first chapter of "Mein Kampf". And nowhere in "Mein Kampf" does he write it would be god's will to execute the jews.

True.

Maybe not in those exact words, but hindsight being what it is...passages like this fit the bill :

What we have to fight for is the necessary security for the existence and increase of our race and people, the subsistence of its children and the maintenance of our racial stock unmixed, the freedom and independence of the Fatherland; so that our people may be enabled to fulfill the mission assigned to it by the Creator. - Mein Kampf.
