Sam Harris On Japan

"Either God can do nothing to stop catastrophes like this, or he doesn’t care to, or he doesn’t exist. God is either impotent, evil, or imaginary. Take your pick, and choose wisely.

The only sense to make of tragedies like this is that terrible things can happen to perfectly innocent people. This understanding inspires compassion.

Religious faith, on the other hand, erodes compassion. Thoughts like, “this might be all part of God’s plan,” or “there are no accidents in life,” or “everyone on some level gets what he or she deserves” - these ideas are not only stupid, they are extraordinarily callous. They are nothing more than a childish refusal to connect with the suffering of other human beings. It is time to grow up and let our hearts break at moments like this." - Sam Harris

I just found this blog by hitting the 'Next Blog' button. And I'm forced to comment on 'God's' part in the tsunami.

IF God is to 'blame' for the death and destruction in Japan, then explain HOW please.

I don't recall the Japanese people being forced by God to live in low lying, tsunami prone ares, or if he did, I doubt the Japanese people listened as few of them are Christians. If it was a Japanese God, why do you believe in that God, but no others?

If you discount the humans CHOOSING to live in low lying areas thing, how about this. The tsunami was caused by the actions of a LIVING planet. In that earthquakes are caused by tectonic plate movement. Most scientists agree that IF the plates quit moving, and the magma cooled, we'd all DIE from the planet being frozen solid underneath us.

If, you propose that God could have left us in the Garden of Eden, which means you acknowledge His existence, then you seek to OVER RULE His decision to boot Adam and Eve out of the Garden, for breaking His rules.

That seems kind of presumptuous! When mom or dad grounded your sibling(s), did you over rule THEM? If so, how'd that work for you?

Here's what I really think though. Most people question God's existence while at he same time assuming that HE should take care of us, regardless of how we act toward Him or each other. Is that how your physical PARENTS did things?

I don't believe in any gods.

Why believe in any gods?
