I think Kirk has something there....but I think we saw it happen at the BEGINNING of the episode. The Desmond that ran into Jack on the plane had a wedding ring....the Desmond that got off the plane made a point of saying he wasn't married and even showed his ring finger. He's definitely doing some kind of jumping between the realities.

I'm thinking the Desmond of the original timeline switched places with the Desmond of the altered timeline toward the end of that episode.
When this season started, I thought I had everything figured out, but now I've given up and decided to wait and see. Great show.
I can barely enjoy it each week as the entire time I'm thinking..only 5 to go...sigh*
