Bible passage of the week...

Genesis 38:8-10 (NIV)

Then Judah said to Onan, "Lie with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother." But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother. What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so he put him to death also.

Didn't his sister-in-law wonder about all that sticky stuff on the floor?

Sorry. That was my inner eighth-grader speaking.

that book is PORNOGRAPHY! where is that bonfire pastor when you really need him?

ain't it funny indeed how the peeps who quote that book left and right only quote CERTAIN things and not ALL things?

I'm a bit confused by this one. So you can nail your brother's wife, impregnate her, and go on with your life with no tie to the children, but if you lay with her and don't release the seeds inside you're supposed to die?

Man, that's a mind twister....

Yes, a mind twister in a book that is chock full of them.

As Christopher Hitchens has said....The book asks you to believe that it is more likely that the laws on nature were suspended rather than believe a Hebrew woman would lie.

When I read the bible, I have to constantly remind myself that some of the writing context were written of a the soical practice of different time, location and ethic and tradition which maybe different from today.

Anyway the background story was the elder brother (first born) was dead and back in their culture and society, someone need to carry on the blood line. So out of duty( at that time and age in the old testament which is more than 3k or more years ago), the brother next inline who is not married is to carry on the duty to reproduce a bloodline. (as they cannot sent the willow away which maybe more wrong).

Also back then married woman who are childless were looked down too. So many would guess the fault lies with the woman (naturally at that age) if she is cannot bare a child. So what this man did was evil as he take the fun but do not want to give that woman a name or the honor to have a child and thus that action is classed as an evil act.

we must be mindful that was way back when the social law, tradition and race of a certain group are different.

If you read the bible esp the old testament, they are way messed up life than we can ever imagine but overall mankind are given a chance to start it over again and hopefully do not commit the same mistake.

It is just like History and that is why it is called a "testament". One should be wise to read the whole context in every reading regardless is the bible or not.

Just my 2cents. :)
