I would throw Bone Machine into the running for best Tom Waits album. Also, Heart of Saturday Night, if you're looking for something a bit more mellow.
The Professor makes a damn fine point.....Bone Machine is not to be overlooked. Heck, if Goin' Out West was the only song on the album, it would still demand tons of respect.
And Claudia is probably correct...Rain Dogs is that damn good. It covers an insane amount of stylistic ground extremely well.

Dig into either Rain Dogs or Mule Variations. Probably his 2 best albums.

I love Alice. It's lyrically brilliant and has the feel of musical vignettes.
Yes....Alice and Blood Money, which were released on the same day, are both very good and extremely theatrical. Even for Tom.
